  • Case of Packaging Vibration Testing According to ISTA - 3A Standard Using Vibration Table for Customers

    1. Project Background A well - known Home appliance product manufacturer planned to launch a new Refrigerators and washing machines. In order to ensure that the product could reach consumers in good condition during long - distance transportation and multiple transfers, the company intended to carry out packaging vibration testing in accordance with the ISTA - 3A standard. They entrusted our professional testing institution to complete this task, hoping that through the test, the rationality of the packaging design could be verified, and potential problems could be found and solved in time to reduce the loss caused by product damage during transportation. 2. Test Preparation 2.1 Test Sample The test samples were Refrigerant, each of which was packaged in the company's newly designed packaging box. The packaging box was made of corrugated cardboard, with buffer materials such as foam inside to fix and protect the mobile phone. 2.2 Test Equipment We used a professional vibration table that met the ISTA - 3A standard. This vibration table has the functions of adjustable frequency, amplitude and vibration direction, and can accurately simulate various vibration environments during transportation. In addition, we also prepared equipment such as accelerometers, data collectors and environmental chambers to monitor and record the test data and environmental conditions. 2.3 Test Plan Formulation According to the requirements of the ISTA - 3A standard, we formulated a detailed test plan. The test would include two parts: sinusoidal vibration test and random vibration test. In the sinusoidal vibration test, we would set different frequencies (from 1Hz to 500Hz) and amplitudes to simulate the resonance phenomenon that may occur during transportation. In the random vibration test, we would simulate the random vibration environment in actual transportation according to the specified power spectral density. At the same time, the test would be carried out in different directions (vertical and horizontal) to comprehensively evaluate the anti - vibration performance of the packaging. 3. Test Process 3.1 Sample Installation First, we placed the packaged mobile phone samples on the vibration table. We ensured that the samples were firmly fixed to prevent them from moving or falling during the test. Then, we installed accelerometers on the samples and the vibration table to monitor the vibration acceleration. 3.2 Sinusoidal Vibration Test We started the sinusoidal vibration test according to the set parameters. During the test, the data collector continuously recorded the vibration acceleration, frequency and amplitude. We observed the samples in real time to check whether there was any damage, such as cracks on the packaging box, looseness of the buffer materials or damage to the mobile phone. After the test at each frequency, we stopped the vibration table and carefully inspected the samples. 3.3 Random Vibration Test After completing the sinusoidal vibration test, we carried out the random vibration test. The test parameters were set according to the power spectral density specified in the ISTA - 3A standard. During the test, we also monitored and recorded the relevant data in real time. Similarly, we observed the samples to check for any damage. The random vibration test lasted for a certain period of time to simulate the long - distance transportation process. 4. Test Results and Analysis 4.1 Test Results After the completion of all tests, we inspected the 10 samples. Among them, 9 samples were intact, with no damage to the packaging box and the mobile phone. However, 2 samples had slight damage: the corner of the packaging box was slightly deformed, and the buffer material inside was slightly displaced, but the mobile phone itself was not damaged. 4.2 Result Analysis We analyzed the test data and the damage of the samples. The results showed that the overall packaging design of the product met the requirements of the ISTA - 3A standard, as most samples remained intact after the test. The slight damage of the 2 samples may be due to the uneven distribution of the buffer material in the packaging box, which led to insufficient protection at the corner during the vibration process. In addition, the vibration acceleration at certain frequencies during the test may have exceeded the bearing capacity of the local part of the packaging box, resulting in deformation. 5. Recommendations Based on the test results and analysis, we put forward the following recommendations to the customer: Optimize the distribution of buffer materials in the packaging box to ensure that all parts of the product, especially the corners, are fully protected. Strengthen the structural design of the packaging box, such as increasing the thickness of the corner or using reinforced materials, to improve its anti - deformation ability. Conduct a small - scale trial production of the improved packaging and carry out the vibration test again to verify the effectiveness of the improvement measures. 6. Conclusion Through the packaging vibration test in accordance with the ISTA - 3A standard using the vibration table, we comprehensively evaluated the anti - vibration performance of the customer's new product packaging. The test results showed that the packaging design was basically reasonable, but there were some areas that needed to be optimized. The recommendations we put forward can help the customer improve the packaging, ensure that the product can withstand the vibration environment during transportation, and reduce the risk of damage.
